This year’s lifestyle design show, Maison & Objet Paris by British design studio Tom Dixon

British design studio Tom Dixon’s Materialism range of candles, scents and vessels received two further additions during this year’s lifestyle design show, Maison & Objet Paris.

  • Stone: The deep green marble vessel encases a scent of dry exotic fig and sandalwood, which relates to the origins of the stone. Hand-turned in India, the heavy container is made from a single block of marble. This raw, earthy material is refined with a rounded form and polished finish which lends itself to luxury interiors.
  • Alloy: This light aluminium cast vessel captures a fusion of amber and metal in its scent. The contemporary container has machine-finished edges, which have a clean, industrial appeal. Like all the vessels in the range, this one is also designed to exist as a home accessory beyond the lifetime of the candle.

The Materialism collection is designed to evoke sensory experiences and explore material elements through tactility and scent. A few years ago, we saw designers readdressing stone and looking to its abundance for a new form of sustainable luxury – see Made of Stone for more.

Each vessel in the range has a package that visually corresponds to its material characteristics. See Packaging Futures: Luxury for more on how luxury brand packaging focuses on detail and finish to capture the attention of impressionable markets.
